6.Aims for the 4th Rice Harvesting Season Festival (Maa Ledungga)

The 4th Maa Ledungga festival, held every 3 years, will be held this year.
The 4th Maa Ledungga will take up the theme of “sanctuary (an important place or value that should be protected)”.
Sanctuary is a word that refers to areas in society that should be protected, such as the environment and human rights.
This theme is set against the backdrop of the spread of environmental and social chaos caused by humans’ desire and belief to control nature.
Humans consider themselves “perfect beings” and feel as if they have the complete right to use nature freely. This exploitation of nature eventually leads to the destruction of nature.
Behind this lies a desire for power, and humans gradually become arrogant. They begin to treat other living things as “objects” that can be used at will.
At the same time, even though humanity continues to develop in the name of “progress” and “civilization,” conflicts and wars continue to this day due to ideological differences, oppression, and social disparities.

The theme of “sanctuary (places and values that should be protected)” poses various questions to us.
Who really needs these precious places to be protected? Is it animals, plants, and all other living things other than humans? Or is it humans themselves, whose rights, places to live, and means of survival are taken away by the desires of others?
Or perhaps it is our endless desires – greed and the thirst for power – that should be protected in the first place.
I would be happy if artists, visual creators, and others would have the opportunity to consider this theme through their own artistic expression and aesthetics. I hope that diverse interpretations will emerge as each person thinks and feels carefully.
